For those of you who never experience this in the morning, kudos to you. For those who read the above statements and think to themselves “Hmmmmm, is she talking about me???”, then keep reading.
Before you go out and start swiping your cards and buying a bunch of pieces that you think you need, your solution could be as simple as a closet cleanse and/or clean. The new year brings us so much cleansing and cleaning in regards to our health and relationships. This concept can be applicable to your closet as well!
A cleanse doesn’t necessarily mean throw everything out. It means going through your closet and thinking about if you need a certain article or not. I was keeping so many pieces for the most ridiculous reasons. “I can get it hemmed and wear it as a short dress one day”. Or the best, “If I lose 10 more lbs I can wear these again.” But let’s be honest, if I need a short dress for a wedding, why spend money to shorten a long dusty one from my closet when I can go buy a new one. If I lose 10 lbs, you bet I’m going to treat myself to a new outfit for my hard work.

So when going through your closet you really have to take the time to think of the value of each piece. One of my fatal flaws is buying multiple of the same shirt in the same color. I don’t discourage this. But I do encourage, inspecting the pieces and deciding if they need to be replaced. If you have 5 of the same shirt and 2 of those shirts have holes in the seams, the black is starting to look grey, or the fabric is starting to pill in certain areas, then it’s time to toss it. Chances are you are going to wear those other 3 shirts over the 2 that are holey. #AmIRight?
For those who are emotionally attached and not ready to totally cleanse just yet, sometimes a closet clean can give you a fresh look. When your closet is jammed, hangers are sticking out everywhere, clothes are being smashed into drawers, the last thing you want to do is dig for something to wear. So you tend to just pull and replace the same items that are in the front and accessible.
By cleaning your closet, you can rearrange by color, by style, by type, giving you an easier way of getting ready in the morning. And by doing this you will see that you will inadvertently cleanse while you are at it. I like to do my drawers every so often. I’ll empty them all out and then refold them and organize by color and type. A big game changer also is hangers. I switched all my hangers out in my closet to the grey velvet ones. I had so many hangers that were dry cleaning hangers, wooden hangers, or the white plastic hangers. By changing and making all the hangers the same, my clothes hung better and fit in my closet better as well. You can get a pack of 25 velvet hangers from Home Goods for about $9.99.
For the past couple of weeks, Bird has been getting ready in the morning saying he didn’t know what to wear. So before I go off and start swiping, I decided to cleanse and clean. I’ve spent the past couple days getting his closet back in order.
