M.Jonesy Friday Fab Five Tips – Camo

Functionally it is to disguise and conceal, but this craze is doing the opposite. One of this spring’s biggest trends is camo and you’re not hiding behind it. Camo pieces are the focal point of a look.

In my opinion, camo is a staple that you should have in your closet. It pairs well with black, brown, and denim. And if you are feeling adventurous, you can add a pop of color against it like a yellow or orange. If or when the Fashion Gods deem it out of style, I think it’s safe to say you don’t have to toss it into the donate pile.

Here’s SBMJ’s Friday Fab Five Tips to integrating camo into your street style:

1) Jackets or Overwear
You can add a jacket to an all black look to give it a pop. Pair a bomber jacket or cropped jacket with denim and a graphic tee. The camo jacket is perfect for those transition months when you don’t need that parka but still need a little something to combat the chill in the air. My signature camo jacket is from Akira. I’ve styled it 3 different ways below – a pop for my all black concert look, with a graphic tee and distressed denim for a casual ice cream date, and with shorts and a bodysuit for a warm July night.

Here are a few options for this military style camo jacket:
1. Sanctuary Jacket from Revolve
2. Alpha Industries Jacket from Revolve
3. Camo Jacket from Fashion Nova with print detailing on the back
4. Cropped Camo Jacket from TJ Maxx

2) Dress it up
You can’t get more ‘focal point’ then a camo dress. This is a statement piece for sure. Sometimes all you need to do is pair with some booties and a clutch. But remember my tip from last post? You can also style around a camo dress by adding a leather jacket (like below) or say, a solid black trench. This camo hooded dress is from Fashion Nova.

Here are a few options for Camo Dresses:
1. Short Sleeve Hooded Camo Dress from Akira
2. Camo Tie Waist Shirt Dress from Miss Guided
3. Camo Tunic Bodycon Dress from Fashion Nova and per above, you could style this with simple booties and this Black Trench from My Style Mode.

3) From Top…
Camo tees and sweatshirts are perfect casual street style pieces to wear when you’re running errands, in the pickup line, or out for a casual brunch with your friends. You can even find some that have other detailing to them — like my top below with the neckline cut out. And also below, we’re back to the outerwear tip again. Adding a grey faux fur jacket took the look to another level. I’ve also found that camo is great for sporting events (referencing back to my sports post a couple months ago). My Camo sweatshirts below are from Target and also a cute boutique in Denver called W-Boutique.

Here are a few options for Camo Tops:
1. Basic Camo Long Sleeve Top from Lulus
2. Camo Long Sleeve Ruffle Top from Akira
3. Camo Pull Over Hoodie from Nordstrom
4. Camo X-Neck Long Sleeve from Francesca’s

4) …To Bottom
Skinnies, joggers, wide leg, cargo – camo bottoms come in all shapes, sizes, and lengths. Unlike regular jeans or black pants, camo bottoms are a statement piece that you style around. I found these camo jeans from Francesca’s last year on clearance for $10. I wasn’t sure what I was going to wear them with when I bought them, but who can pass these up for that price. Fast forward a few months, add black boots and my crop jacket from Top Shop and I have a bad ass outfit.

Here are a few options for Camo Bottoms:
1. Cropped Cargos from Nordstrom
2. Distressed Jeans from Akira
3. High Waist Cargo Pants from Akira
4. LOVE THESE AND WILL BE PURCHASING – Track Trousers from Revolve
5. Camo Mini Skirt from Pretty Little Thing – which I would personally style with a graphic tee and jean jacket.

5) Accessorize
When in doubt accessorize. Add a hat or a handbag to a casual black on the go ensemble. Want to walk into a room with a statement? How about some camo booties or wedges? Whatever you choose, I guarantee someone will stop to ask you where you got your accessory from.

Here are a few options for Camo Accessories:
1. Wedge Booties from Nordstrom
2. Camo Open Toe Booties from Miss Guided
3. Rebecca Minkoff Nylon Belt Bag (aka Fanny Pack) from Nordstrom – perfect for Festival Season!!!
4. Herschel Supply Co Bamfield Mid Volume Weekender Bag in Woodland Camo
5. Fashion Hat from Francesca’s

Open up your thinking. Take a risk. Add a camo top to a solid bottom. Instead of a simple black bomber jacket opt for the camo style. Accessorize with a camo backpack or hat. Integrate a piece or two into your closet and it will take your every day looks to the next level.

Stay Styled,
Michelle
