M.Jonesy’s Friday Five – Lauren Messiah’s 10 Things Every Stylish Woman Owns (Part 1)

I’m always looking for inspiration and guidance, not only for fashion trends but also with building my business. A couple of years ago, what helped catapult me into my SBMJ journey is a company called School of Style. Basically a business class specific to professional Personal Stylists. They covered everything from opening a separate business checking account to how to write press releases or business contracts. It was the perfect way for me to educate myself on how I was going to turn my passion into a career. It was the best initial investment that I had made for SBMJ.

With all the knowledge that I’ve gained from the School of Style, one of the most valuable are the connections that I’ve made with other Stylists. I’ve learned that working from home can be a lonely world, but now I have a network of colleagues that I can bounce ideas off of. I’ve also made connections with a couple of master stylists who are truly HASHTAG GOALS. One of my all-time favorite stylists who you should all follow is Lauren Messiah. Check out her YouTube channel for straight up honest fashion feedback and follow her on Instagram because her Insta stories have me rollin! 🤣🤣🤣

Lauren did a YouTube segment a while back on “10 Things Every Stylish Woman Owns”. It was one of my favorite videos. As I watched I checked things off the list and then gave myself a pat on the back when I had all 10 🎉🥇 So this week’s Friday 5 is a 2 part series, inspired by Style Expert Lauren Messiah.

Without further ado….here are 5 out of 10 things Every Stylish Woman Owns.

ITEM 1: A perfect pair of jeans 👖
“You don’t need 100 pair of jeans, you just need that one that fits you perfectly, like a glove” – Lauren Messiah

I’ll be honest, I used to never wear jeans. I was more of a jeggings or dress kind of girl. I just never thought they fit me correctly. Until I found the perfect pair. Let me be clear it took me a very long time (years) to finally find jeans that I felt good in. But the world of denim has changed. I can attribute that to designers understanding that women’s bodies are all different. Khloé Kardashian, for example, has her line of denim with Good American. She has jeans that fit all shapes and sizes, she creates one style and fabricates them for 3 different body types. Lala Anthony also has a collection at Lord & Taylor that is supposed to fit curvier women. Like everything else in our world today, the denim industry has evolved and there is a lot of technology that has changed how you can shop for jeans.

Your perfect pair can be affordable or they can be designer. There’s nothing wrong with splurging on a pair of designer jeans if they fit you amazingly. For me personally, I spend about $50-$100 on a pair of jeans. I favor a skinny jean with a mid-rise or high-rise waist. So many options for cut, rise, and style! Two of my favorites I have pictured below. One is from Akira ($60.00) and one is from Lord Taylor ($80). I am also obsessed with high waist jeans from Fashion Nova (not pictured below).

I have links to all of these below on my Arthur page so hang in there and keep reading!

ITEM 2: A Classic Blazer
“You can do so many things with a blazer, every stylish woman has at least one.” – Lauren Messiah

I’ve mentioned this in many posts already. I love a good blazer. It’s something that you can wear with your perfect pair of jeans above, with a dress, or a pair of trousers. I’ve been daring and have even worn them with cut offs….eeeep! 🤪 Find your classic blazer and make it a staple in your closet.  When I find pieces that I love, I end up buying them in all the colors. Hence the peplum blazer below.  The front drape blazer is also a big hit. I’ve purchased it for 2 of my clients who love it! All 3 blazers I’ve worked with Jeans, skirts, and dresses.

ITEM 3: A Pair of Fancy Shoes 👠
“I believe every stylish woman has one pair of special shoes.” – Lauren Messiah

You know how I am always talking about goals and intentions? This was one of those stretch goals that you can add to your list. For me, Christian Louboutins, aka red bottoms, aka Bloody Shoes, have been something that I’ve always wanted but never been able to obtain. I receive my first pair as a Christmas present last year from Bird. I am now saving up for another pair to buy on my own. There’s a pair of Jimmy Choo’s that I’ve been pining over. There’s something to be said when I put these shoes on. It just gives me an elevated level of confidence. For you, they may not be Louboutins. Maybe they are a pair of Tory Burch flats. Or perhaps a pair of Gucci Flip Flops 🤣 But whatever they are, they make you feel bomb.com when you put them on.

You can check out websites like Gilt.com where they run sales for high-end products. What’s your stretch shoe goal?

ITEM 4: A Piece of Jewelry That Is Just You
“Stylish women always have that jewelry piece that they are known for.” – Lauren Messiah

This item is something that is truly specific to you. It could be a piece of jewelry that was passed down from a family member or perhaps a statement necklace that you wear for formal occasions or casual encounters. Maybe it is a fun piece of jewelry that you found at a thrift store or that big-ticket item that you splurged on for yourself. I have a client who LOVES pearls and a friend who always has the best chunky necklaces.

Mine is my “M” necklace. I have a rectangular shaped one from Baublebar and a circle shaped Kate Spade that I received as a gift from my goddaughter. I know, sounds very “Carrie Necklace from Sex And The City”. But this is my bit! They’re both a little worn down now because I wear them all the time. But it’s my piece of jewelry that I throw on even when I’m running errands or when I’m dressing up and unsure what to accessorize with. When in doubt, that is my go-to piece. And from the pics below, also accessorize with your best Snapchat filter lol.

ITEM 5: A No-Fail Makeup Look 💄
“As a stylish woman myself, know a face I can put on and not look jacked up.” – Lauren Messiah

When I was on vacation last week with my gal pals, we were all getting ready and Lindsey turned to me and said: “Are you contouring???” And I casually replied to her “Yup I contour. every. single. day.” But that’s just me! Some people’s go to make up look could be some tinted moisturizer, mascara, and lipgloss. For me, as you know, I am extra 💁🏽‍♀️ My go-to makeup look has a lot of moving parts, but I can tell you with full confidence that I can execute my look in five minutes if necessary and if you really want to challenge me I can do it with a small compact mirror.

Disclaimer, it took me YEARS to figure out what go-to makeup look suits me. I was always plagued with skin problems that took me a long time (and a lot of $$$) to get under control. I have a lot of patchiness and dark spots that I like to cover, which adds to my makeup process.

For you, find a look that YOU are comfortable with and just do it 100%.

So here is my no-fail make up process:
1. Primer all over my face – daytime casual is Smashbox Photo Finish, night time extra look is Becca Backlight Primer.

2. Foundation & Powder – Fenty Beauty foundation all over, applied with a brush or beauty blender (but I suggest brush because the foundation is more dense and fast drying). When I dont want something too heavy I also use MAC Studio Fix It Foundation Powder.

3. Contour time – Fenty Beauty Match Stick Trio. I love how creamy it goes on. The highlight stick I’ve also used on my lids. I use a beauty blender to blend the concealer and a contour brush for the contour.

4. Highlight powder – for night time extraness. I love my Tarte palette.

5. Eyes – Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pencil, Stila long wear liquid eyeliner on the lower and upper lid (smudge upper lid), Bobbi Brown palette (many options for day or night, subtle or dramatic), and then Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.

6. Lips – I love a good nude. Fenty has an amazing gloss that smells fab also.

7. Last but not least the setting spray or powder is a must!

It seems like a lot of steps but for me, this is my go-to face 🤡🤡🤡 I always say to everyone, unlike Beyoncé, I DID NOT wake up like this 😂 All these items are in my Arther Page below.

So this is Part 1 of Lauren Messiah’s 5 things every stylish woman must own! Did you check off all 5? What items are you missing and what are your goals to try to find these pieces? Remember, find your style and comfort zone that is your own and work it. What is good for me may be different for you!
