M.Jonesy’s Friday Five – Lauren Messiah’s 10 Things Every Stylish Woman Owns (Part 2)

It’s Friday! Welcome to part 2 of SBMJ’s Friday Five.  Last week I talked about the 5 things in my closet that would render me a “stylish person” – part one of Lauren Messiah’s YouTube video on “10 things Every Stylish Women Owns”.

Let’s review the first 5 together, shall we:
1⃣ A perfect pair of jeans 👖

ITEM 6: A Classic Handbag
“Having a quality classic bag will upgrade your whole entire look” – Lauren Messiah

For myself right now I would say that I have two classic handbags. One is a black Tory Burch bag I purchased a couple of years ago. The other is a completely affordable Sole Society bag (pictured below) that I purchased last summer at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. However, I do have a couple of “goal” bags that I’ve been eyeing. You know me and my goals. I’d say a classic handbag is equivalent to the fancy shoes in last week’s post. It’s something that is functional in nature, but also gives you an elevated level of confidence when you pair it with your outfit.

In Lauren’s YouTube video she also says, “Maybe you can’t walk out right now and buy that Chanel bag, but you can save up, you can get it on consignment, you can find a deal, or on eBay. Make it a goal to have that perfect classic bag.”

Goals on goals on goals. Mine is a Gucci Medium size Leather Shoulder Bag. 🤩 There are links to some of my goal bags at the end of this post on my Arthur shopping page.

ITEM 7: A Great Tee Shirt
“Stylish women have tee shirts that fit perfectly.” – Lauren Messiah

Hey All you “Jeans and a T-shirt people” out there, listen up! You know those perfect jeans from last week’s post? Pair them with your great T-shirt from this weeks post and you have your outfit of the day. And then…I don’t know…throw on your fancy shoes and a blazer and grab your classic handbag, and you could grace the pages of InStyle magazine.

Even though I‘m extra with my outfits, I do love myself a good basic tee. With T-shirts, you get what you pay for. If you spend a little bit more 💸💸💸 on a T-shirt, (which some of you are thinking “WHY would I spend any sort of money on a plain tee???), you will definitely get your money’s worth and longevity out of that top. If you spend less, I guarantee that you will be buying a new basic tee by the next season. But to each their own. Find that perfect T-shirt that would be great with jeans, a denim skirt, or even tucked into a pair of trousers.

I have a handful of tees that I love. Nordstrom makes some great basic white, grey, and black V-neck T-shirts. I always scoop them up during the anniversary sale. Currently, my favorite is a graphic tee that reads “FEMME”, which you might have seen in some of my previous posts (A Friday Five from a few weeks ago!)

SIDENOTE: A tee option for me is a great bodysuit. I have a handful of basic bodysuits that are tee shirt style. They look neat and clean for a “tucked-in look”. I linked up some bodysuit tees in my Arthur Page as well. I love the bodysuits from Naked Wardrobe.

ITEM 8: A Signature Piece of Outerwear 👠
“Whatever it is, find it, find what fits your signature style and make sure you have a nice upgraded version of that in your closet.” – Lauren Messiah

In Chicago outerwear is a must! It could be anything from a cream-colored trench coat to a jean jacket. I love me a good moto jacket. I’ve been rocking a black H&M leather jacket regularly that I bought over 7 years ago. A few weeks ago I made a new purchase of a white vegan leather jacket from Akira. It’s my new fave. I’ve worn it almost every day since I’ve purchased it!

ITEM 9: A Go-To Cocktail Dress
“It could be a little black dress. It could be a little white dress or a little sequin dress.” – Lauren Messiah

Me, I’m an LBD kinda girl. I won’t drone on about it, I’ll just point you to the LBD Friday Five.

ITEM 10: A Hair Stylist You Can Trust 💄
“When you can’t get your hair game on point, the rest of your look struggles.” – Lauren Messiah

My relationship with Jenny at Sean Patrick’s Salon in LaGrange is the 2nd longest relationships I’ve ever had. I started seeing her almost 20 years ago. She’s done my highlights, low lights, all over color, dusted my ends, watched my hair grow down to my waste, then chop it to my chin. She’s done layers, added bangs, started ombre, to bleach blonde, bayalage, conditioning treatments galore, and I’m sure will be on board for whatever crazy idea I have next for my hair (but I think the blonde is here to stay). I trust her with my life. Like in Mean Girls, my hair is where I hold all my secrets. So I need to have someone that I trust to keep them.  I’ll spare you the pics of my Dora bangs and aggressive highlights.

This comprehensive list is a great style goal to work towards. Build off these essentials and you’d have curated yourself a stylish, but most importantly, a WEARABLE closet. You can mix and match, but each item should be so special and specific to you that they’d stand alone as well.
